Cost Judgement on the Formula Students Hungary Event

We had a chance to judge the participants in two categories, in the field of SUSTAINABILITY and REAL CASE STUDY.

XMEDITOR, a professional communications company has organized its 7th international competition in university and college building race cars category.

The increasing popularity of Hungarian competition indicates that a record number of 113 teams came forward this year and during the open registration into the competition entry depended on milliseconds. Participation was not only for engineering students, because due to the complexity of the task also requires knowledge of other disciplines (eg. In economics, marketing, legal areas).
Aim of the competition was to provide students applying their theoretical knowledge in practice. Design, teamwork required in the manufacturing and marketing, compliance and project management, deal with deadlines gave important experiences to young engineers and students from economic and legal area, which supplemented the theoretical training studies with an extremely useful working knowledge.

During Susatinability event competitors task was to give a 10-minute presentation on the sustainability of tyres based on their life cycle.

Participant took into consideration, that sustainability has three major pillars: environmental, social and economic. The automotive industry increasingly uses the Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) to determine a product’s environmental footprint and its social and economical impact.
LCA five main stages was analysed (material, extraction, end¬ of¬ life, ¬disposal and manufacturing, use and transport). Presentation had to focus on identifying an economic aspect of the material extraction stage, a social aspect of the manufacturing stage, an economic aspect of the use stage, an environmental aspect of the end-of-life (disposal) stage, an environmental aspect of the transport stage, and comparing how these affect the sustainability of the tyres.

As a "real case" task, competitors had to give a 15-minute presentation after a random choice, on how to manufacture an upright or pedal box for your car to reduce the cost by 15%. the production volume had to be 5000 units per year. They had to discuss the material selection, design for manufacturing, manufacturing processes, tooling requirements, cycle times, factory layout, quality control and total cost.

Most of the competitors were really well prepared giving us an amasing presentation, beside the good mood, their raicing car put up an extreemly good show.

Congratulation for all of the team and organisers!
